Holstein Kinderfest held a great out-of-this-world parade on Saturday, June 17. That was the theme for the parade as we saw rocket ships and astronauts riding on their floats. At the head of the parade, there was the presentation of the flags, where we even see a small child with his hand on his heart honoring the servicemen carrying the poles with the flags. At the end of the parade, the fire trucks sprayed out their water to delight the kids with a shower. I believe those kids followed the trucks on the route.
Barry Andersen, former Middle school Principal and Activity Director at the Early school, has now accepted the position of High School principal at Ridge View High School. Andersen is excited to serve,
“I am very honored to have the opportunity to servantly lead the students and staff at Ridge View High School. We have outstanding educators, who care about their students, and strive to provide the highest quality of education for all students. I am very excited to play a part in continuing the academic excellence at Ridge View High School.”
Freedom Quilts from Fonda, Iowa had a presentation of their quilts and what they do at The Ridge (Independent Living) in Holstein. Freedom Quilts is founded and organized by Betty Nielsen from Fonda. Making the quilts is all volunteer run. Volunteers help quilt and tie quilts.

Billy Fraser is not only the Holstein Fire Chief, he is the owner of a firefighter-themed restaurant called Backdraft Bar & Grill. Fraser has run the business for the past 10 years. He explained how he came to own Backdraft.
“It used to be Rubel’s Family BBQ,” he said. “I was bartending for Rubel’s part-time and he was thinking about selling the business. He approached me about it and I decided at that time to purchase it. I opened it in November of 2013.”
Fraser talked about what the restaurant, which employs around 14 people, has to offer.
Holstein Kinderfest has space-jammed activities going on for 4 days starting on June 15. Activities for Thursday, June 15 begins with Thirsty Thursday at CornerHaus 101 from 5-9 p.m. At 6 p.m. is a free meal at the State Theatre. Then at the NWI Premier Sand Courts is Adult Sand Volleyball at 6:30 p.m. If you go to the free meal at the State Theatre, you can stay and watch the Free Movie- ‘Space Jam.’
The Holstein Farmers’ Market is underway as it opened for business and fun June 6. There were several vendors to choose from and some guitar music and song playing to make it relaxing and fun.
Eric Myrtue, head baseball coach at Ridge View, has always had a love of the game. Baseball has become a family affair for the Myrtue clan, as Eric now coaches his sons Cael and Blake, and is assisted by his brother Jacob. Myrtue, who also has been a teacher, gave a brief history of his duties at Galva-Holstein.
“I graduated from Iowa State in 2001,” he stated, “and taught History and Government at Galva-Holstein from 2001 to 2007. During that time, I was assistant football coach, head girls basketball coach, assistant track, golf for a couple of years, and head baseball coach.”
The golf course in Holstein is an award winning recreational area, nestled in the southeast edge of town. The course is member-owned, with approximately 350 golf and social members. In addition to golf, the clubhouse is available for rental for all types of events, such as graduation parties, wedding receptions, conferences, business meetings, and private parties. Several social events are held throughout the year, such as Sunday Brunch, holiday parties, and Trivia. The country club also has its own on-site golf cart storage.
Mayor Kathy Breyfogle welcomed all to Holstein Aquatic Center’s grand opening for the summer. A red ribbon cutting presented the event with clarity as well as the first swimmer Max Breyfogle diving off the board with a big splash! A crowd of people entered the pool for their first swim of the year. The new lifeguards are as follows: Emily Fulton, Sydney Blackmore, Lillian Whitmer, Molly Reiss, Ryan Peterson, Natalie Madsen, Sophia Keleher, Drew Burk, Carson Harriman, Ethan Mason, Kellen Jensen, Ben Schmunck and Shane Reiss.
Stained glass windows were placed in churches to tell the Christian story to worshippers who could not read, which would have been most all of them in medieval times, when stained glass art really hit its peak.
They were also placed in churches so that worshipers who couldn't afford or were not able to go on pilgrimages to the Holy Land or other sites, could see the beauty of the story of Jesus right before them, without leaving their own parish church.
