Private citizens can earn compensation from the City of Holstein for clearing out dead or diseased trees.
During its Sept. 5 meeting, city council heard from Public Works Director Scott Niemeier about the idea of allowing residents to take on tree removal in the right of way for trees that are dead or diseased or that pose a danger.
This would allow for residents to avoid the wait for the city to get around to it and save the city the cost and time involved.
Council members liked the idea and voted to offer a bounty of $100 for residents who want to do so.
Daniel L. Dotzler, president and CEO of United Bank of Iowa, has announced the addition of Kiley Todd to the Board of Directors of United Bank of Iowa effective Aug. 18, 2023. Todd joined United Bank of Iowa in October, 2010, as Regional Branch Manager. In October, 2016, he was promoted to Executive Vice President and Chief Loan officer and will continue to serve in this role.
At the Holstein Farmers’ Market on Sept. 12, there will be a supper with a free will donation with all the proceeds going to the Ronald McDonald House (Upper Midwest). Jeff and Brenda Cronin (grandparents of baby Dottie) along with family and friends will be putting this on.
Billy Fraser, Holstein fire chief and owner of Backdraft Bar & Grill, sat down recently for a visit about the Holstein Fire Department. Fraser listed some of his duties as fire chief.
“I’m basically in charge of the duties of the station,” he explained. “I’m also responsible for control of fire scenes, and control of accidents. I’m in town more than anybody; that helps too.”
Fraser, a Holstein native, is a long-time firefighter.
Republicans held their 11th Annual Sweet Freedom Celebration in Denison at Stables at Copper Ridge on Aug. 29. A Prayer and a stirring national anthem was heard as the audience joined in. Representative Steven Holt’s campaign manager Joyce Kehl introduced the speakers.
Emily Todd has worked 10 years for the Stubbs Library in Holstein as of January 2024. She began as a librarian assistant in 2014. She became the Library Director in 2017. When the position opened, she was also working as a preschool assistant. The director job became available and she leaped into it.
Dr. Abbie (Bagenstos) Otto, D.D.S. and husband, Kelly, purchased the dental office from Dr. Myron Murphy over nine years ago in Holstein. “Downtown Dental” was formed and is located at 128 S. Main St. next to the Holstein State Theatre. In recent years, D/D has been getting a ‘facelift’ both on the exterior and interior. Dr. Abbie wanted to create a classy and modern dental office so timeless colors; of black, white, and grey flock the interior while a teal shade coats the exterior of the building. Dr.
The rehearsal of the play Murder on the Orient Express is underway by the Holstein Community Theatre. The production is at the Rosemary Clausen Center for Performing Arts on Saturday Sept. 16 at 7 p.m. and Sunday Sept. 17 at 2 p.m. Tickets available at the door.
