The Ida County Public Safety and Communications Commission Meeting was held on Nov. 15 at 7 p.m.
Officers were kept busy according to Chief Deputy Fred Anderson who said that there were 612 calls for service in the month of October, thereby being 73 citations with a total of 17 arrests. Furthermore, there were 21 individuals booked into the county jail. As well, the deputies logged a total of 782 hours on patrol. Anderson went on to say that most of the arrests made in the last month were drug-related. Anderson reported that today there are seven inmates in the jail.
The Ida County Conservation Board (ICCB) met on Monday, Nov. 8 at 6 p.m. at the Conservation Center in Moorehead Park. Board members in attendance were Synda Jepsen, Randy Vogt, Dennis Leonard, Sue Knop, Don Poggensee, and Director Zach Hall.
The monthly bills for maintenance supplies for mowers and educational materials were approved. Hall reported that the year-to-date expenditures and revenue, and expenditure reports for Nov. 2022 were in line with monthly and annual predictions.
A visit to the food pantry in Ida Grove found volunteers hard at work preparing bags of food to go to those in need. A couple of patrons there said why they need to come there for food. One man said he is a single parent and finances are hard being a single parent. He has a full-time job but needs extra food to offset the budget. Another woman says she is on disability and cannot work. She gets food stamps but they just do not go very far. She has a teenage son and he needs food, for he is a growing boy.
With the 47th Annual Iowa High School and College State Dance Team Championship fast approaching, some area youth will be heading to Wells Fargo Arena for a chance at state glory.
Ridge View Hip Hop will perform Nov. 30 as well as soloists Brookelynn Cudaback and Emma Mentzer. Jazz and Novelty is set for Dec. 1.

Two Holstein Girl Scouts, Kiara Dutler and Grace Venteicher, received their Girl Scout Gold Award at Court of Awards on Sunday, Nov. 20. The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest and most prestigious award in Girl Scouting. Dutler's project was Un"MASK"ing The Shortage of PPE During A Pandemic and Venteicher's project was Children’s Hospital Tie Blankets. Only 5.4% of eligible Girl Scouts successfully earn the Gold Award.
A Galva man accused of murdering another man on Main Street and then attacking an Ambulance crew arriving to help the victim is set for arraignment Dec. 12 in Ida County.
Jesus Isai Diaz, 24, was arrested after an altercation at 7:33 p.m. that saw Eduardo Diaz found dead in the 200 block of Main Street.
The accused allegedly stabbed the victim multiple times, and witnesses saw the accused allegedly kicking and punching the unresponsive victim’s body with the accused crossing the street and then coming back to assail the body even more.
In a closely contested race for Ida County Board of Supervisors District 3, Devlun Whiteing narrowly defeated Todd Conover. The two were vying for the spot left open when Supervisor Rhett Leonard decided not to seek another term. Whitening garnered 491 votes for 55 percent of the total, while Conover received 409 votes for 45 percent of the total. Whiteing currently serves as Mayor of Ida Grove, and a new mayor will be appointed to serve the remainder of his term.
The Ida County Board of Supervisors met on Tuesday, Nov. 15 at 9 a.m. Board members in attendance were Chair Raymond Drey and Rhett Leonard. Creston Schubert participated via phone conference.
County Engineer Jeff Williams presented a salary certification for Shane Walker, Operator/Bookkeeper at $28 per hour effective Nov. 15.
A final voucher for Cedar Valley with regards to the overlay project of M25 was presented. The Chair was authorized to sign the voucher.
Total Motors in Le Mars and Vollmar Motors in Holstein have once again continued making strides against Breast Cancer for the sixth consecutive year. For the year 2022, we’ve officially hit $64,000 in local donations which are generated by Total and Vollmar Motors’ commitment to donate $100 for each sold vehicle during October.
The Galva-Holstein Board of Education and the Schaller-Crestland Board of Education met in joint session on Monday, Nov. 14 at 6 p.m. in the Holstein media center.
Board members in attendance were Grant Aschinger, Don Kalin, Beth Schossow, Matthew Wittrock, Jamie Whitmer and Jeff Witzke. Administrators in attendance were Superintendent Adam Bisenius and Principals Beth Bellinghausen, Katrisha Rinnan and Joshua Sussman.
