The Galva-Holstein Board of Education, along with the Schaller-Crestland Board of Education, met in regular session on December 12, in the media center of the Galva-Holstein School in Holstein.
The boards approved the resignation of Janae Coe, Wee Wildcat Daycare and the hiring of Joshua Sussman as prom sponsor.
The Ida County Board of Supervisors met on Tuesday, Dec. 13 at 9 a.m. Board members in attendance were Chair Raymond Drey, Creston Schubert and Rhett Leonard.
Compensation Board members Dan Remer, Sheriff’s Representative; Rita Frahm, Auditor’s Representative and LuAnn Bennett, Supervisor’s Representative were on hand to advocate for their salary recommendations to align with the state ranking of the County’s population ranking. Also in attendance were Sheriff Wade Harriman, Treasurer Traci Riessen, Recorder Julie Phillips, and Devlun Whiteing.
Ida County Conservation Board staff have been busy managing events, park resources, and infrastructure. Moorehead Park’s main well pump has been replaced with good improvements. Actions pertaining to ICCB’s PWS operation permit were informed to the DNR Environmental department. Financial support in FY2024 was allocated to support the ICCF handicapped fishing pier improvement project at Crawford Creek Recreation area.
Lisa Irlbeck, Marketing Director, will help with fraud education outreach for older adults Carroll, Iowa (Dec. 15, 2022) – Availa Bank is proud to announce that Lisa Irlbeck, Marketing Director and Availa Bank team member for 16 years, will be part of the Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) Consumer Education and Outreach Committee with the goal of identifying ways to prevent scams affecting older adults. Lisa will be part of the Consumer Education Committee, whose focus is on messaging to help older adults spot, avoid, and report scams.
At Galva’s council meeting on Dec. 12, several grant applications were considered.
Grant Else spoke to the council about the cemetery board removing several trees at the cemetery and the possibility of using the City Burn site for disposal. Else told the council they are going to apply for the ICCBF grant (Ida County Community Betterment Foundation) to help with the cost of taking the trees down and asked if the council would be willing to be the fiscal sponsor for them. The council agreed to the proposal for both the tree disposal and the sponsor for the grant application.
Horn Memorial Hospital is beginning the works of an expansion project to meet patients’ needs. The project will meet much needing expansion for the Emergency department, the lab, and other needs. In the emergency department, the project would provide two private larger trauma rooms in lieu of the existing two-bed small and narrow trauma room. It would provide three private infusion rooms in lieu of the current three-chair infusion room. It would improve the registration area in terms of security and patient privacy.
The Holstein City Council conducted its regular meeting at City Hall on Monday, Dec. 5 at 5:30 p.m. Board members in attendance were Schimmer, Stevenson, Wiese, and Voss, as well as Mayor Breyfogle.

County Engineer Jeff Williams presented 3 2023 pickup truck bids as follows: 2 - 3/4 ton Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Double Cabs at $56,236.10 and a 1-ton Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD Double Cab at $53,254.30 from Vollmar Motors and a 2-ton Ford 2022 F550 4X4 pickup from Beckman Motors for $59,350.
On Dec. 1, Mayor Breyfogle introduced the Holstein Betterment Alliance to the community with wonderful speakers who had an interest in showing how our strength grows through community. There was a nice pork dinner and drinks for all those who came before the presenters spoke. Pastor Bob Lewis from St. Paul Lutheran opened with prayer.
Holstein home for the holidays events sparkled the town on Saturday, Dec. 3. Beginning the day was the Cookie walk and vendor show at the Lohff-Schumann Community Center. A wide array of scrumptious cookies and several vendors including Bee Healthy Raw Honey, Creative Artist Ryssa Todd with her beautifully crocheted items, Dakota Puppy Yummies with doggie treats, and Tammy Sonksen with Colorstreet. This event is an annual fundraiser to raise money for various things such as youth sports.
