Florence “Pat” (Luken) Carnes was born to August and Lenore (Nelle) Luken on Jan. 16, 1930 in Granville, Iowa. Pat went to Granville School to 10th grade and graduated from Paulina High School in 1947. She went to Sioux City Beauty School and finished in 1948. She moved to Holstein to work as a beautician and opened her own salon a year later.
She met Clark Carnes, Sr. and they were united in marriage on April 13, 1950. They were lifelong residents of Holstein where they raised their three children, Clark Jr., Thomas and Susan.
Pat was always active, she was in a bowling league for 10 years, belonged to several bridge clubs, and played in golf league and tournaments. Pat and Clark were actively involved in the building of the Holstein Town and Country Club where they enjoyed golfing, socializing and dancing. Pat was also active in her church, Our Lady of Good Counsel of Holstein. She taught catechism and First Communion classes, sang in the choir and helped with many social activities.
Pat enjoyed watching her children play sports and participating in extra-curricular activities of the school and in the community. Later, she enjoyed going to her grandchildren’s many activities.
Pat, Clark and Clark Jr. traveled to Bullhead City, AZ/Laughlin, NV for 20 years, to spend a couple of months in warmer weather during the winter. Before they had children, Pat and Clark enjoyed spending time at Island Lake each summer for a couple of weeks to fish and relax. Later, her time was filled with balancing work and kids and family life and many activities.
Pat loved her family dearly and was always there for them. She was a busy mom, but was always there for her children helping them with homework, making costumes, baking cookies for some celebration or just spending time playing. She also helped her nieces and nephews throughout the years. Pat loved attending family gatherings; many to Granville, IA and Yankton, SD, in addition to a few in St. Paul, MN and Holstein.
Pat had many lifelong friends who she enjoyed spending time with playing cards, golfing, bowling, shopping, going for lunch or just coffee and good conversation.
